What is the Funeral Benefit Option?

When you take out Cover Today Over 50s Life Insurance, you’ll be offered our Funeral Benefit Option,1 which is provided in partnership with Willowbrook, and when the time comes, they will act as your funeral arranger, helping to guide your next of kin through the process. It’s a funeral arrangement that provides a £300 contribution towards the cost of your funeral.

So, for example, if your benefit amount is £5,000 and you add the Funeral Benefit Option to your policy, you will have £5,300 in total towards the cost of your funeral. Any excess benefit amount not paid to Willowbrook Funeral Services for your funeral will be paid to your estate or next of kin.

If you’ve already thought about the kind of funeral you’d like, you can download our free Make Your Wishes Known form. It helps you record your preferences so your loved ones can plan your send-off exactly as you want.

How does it work?

  • When you choose the Funeral Benefit Option,1 Willowbrook Funeral Services will act as your funeral arranger.
  • You’ll receive Funeral Benefit Option documents from Willowbrook Funeral Services.
  • When you pass away, your next of kin simply makes one phone call to Willowbrook to get things underway.
  • Your policy benefit amount will be paid to Willowbrook to help cover the cost of your funeral. The £300 contribution will be put towards the cost of your funeral.
  • If your funeral costs less than your policy benefit amount plus the £300 contribution, any balance left over will be paid to your next of kin or your estate. If your funeral costs more than the policy benefit amount plus the £300 contribution, your next of kin or estate will need to pay the extra cost to Willowbrook.
  • Your next of kin or estate is under no obligation to use the funeral arranger appointed by Willowbrook Funeral Services. If they choose not to, your policy benefit amount will be paid to your estate or next of kin as normal, but you will not receive the extra £300 contribution towards the costs of your funeral.

Some things to think about

  • The value of the £300 funeral benefit contribution is fixed and may not keep up with inflation. There is no cash alternative.
  • If you pass away in the first 4 months of holding your policy, any amount due under your policy will be paid to your next of kin or estate instead of Willowbrook. The funeral can still be provided by Willowbrook, with the £300 funeral benefit contribution still applied as long as your next of kin and Willowbrook agree directly on the payment arrangements for the remaining cost.
  • If you die as a result of a non-accidental death after 4 months of holding your policy, your policy benefit amount will be paid to Willowbrook up to the cost of your funeral.
  • The Funeral Benefit Option is not available to those who live in the following postcode areas: KW (Wick) and IV (Inverness) postcodes & Northern Ireland.
  • In the event of an accidental death, there is an additional sum paid out. If you die as a result of an accident after 4 months of holding your policy, only your original policy benefit amount will be paid to Willowbrook. This will go toward the cost of your funeral, and any remaining sum will be paid out to your next of kin or estate.
  • If you put your insurance policy into Trust, or if you take out a Funeral Plan, you will not be able to use the Funeral Benefit Option.
  • Should you or your next of kin wish to contact us for any reason, including to make a claim on, or cancel the Funeral Benefit Option, or to make a complaint,  please give Cover Today a call on 0800 470 4367 (9am - 7pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays) or email: service@covertoday.co.uk
